Tropical forests are vital for mitigating climate change, serving as global carbon sinks and providing habitats for diverse species. International policy frameworks like UNFCCC REDD+, UNCBD and SDGs 13 and 15 aim to protect and manage these forests. To support national monitoring systems, accurate forest area and change information is crucial, which can be achieved through cost-effective EO-based approaches.

Over the past few years, the European Space Agency (ESA) has launched several new missions aimed at mapping natural ecosystems, including forests, at a higher level of detail than before. These missions include Sentinel and the upcoming BIOMASS mission, which are providing us with more information about forest cover, structure, and dynamics than before. Additionally, free access to commercial data such as Planet Scope has made high-resolution satellite data readily available for forest monitoring purposes.

Forest planning, management, monitoring and restoration can be carried out more easily and accurately thanks to EO FM products. In this respect, tree cover density (TCD) is an essential product for estimating forest area and forest area change. TCD can be adjusted to meet national forest definitions which is essential for forest applications, including UNFCCC REDD+ process. By applying geospatial operations with specific forest definition parameters such as minimum area, minimum width, and minimum canopy cover density, precise forest area maps can be achieved.

Artisanal and Small-Scale mining (ASM) not only harms the environment but also poses serious health risks to local communities through contaminated water supplies. Regulatory activities are necessary to identify and monitor locations of illegal artisanal small-scale mining (ASM) activities in many regions of Africa and South America.

Mangrove forests play a critical role in coastal resilience, mitigating climate change impacts, supporting biodiversity and community livelihoods, and are an important blue carbon sink. Government agencies, often with support from international financing institutions, are introducing mangrove conservation practices and policies aimed at protecting mangroves and restoring lost and degraded mangroves. Accurate information on mangrove extent, condition, and change can help to conserve mangrove areas and prioritize restoration efforts in those areas. Geospatial analysis of mangrove condition and change can identify potential areas for restoration.
In this webinar, we will explore how Sentinel-1 and Sentinel-2 Earth Observation (EO) derived products and the Copernicus DEM can be used for mapping mangrove extent, condition, and change. Land use/land cover (LULC) and change maps are essential for effective forest monitoring and spatial planning. They provide Activity Data (AD) that is necessary for reporting REDD+ and Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions, and offer insights for assessing deforestation and forest degradation rates, identifying deforestation drivers, and planning restoration efforts. Such maps enable accurate and spatially explicit assessments of forest extent, loss, and gain, as well as identifying deforestation locations.
