Country: Malawi
Early Adopter: Forestry Research Institute of Malawi (FRIM)
Use Case: Deforestation Early-warning Systems
EO company lead: GAF AG
Description: This case study focuses on supporting Malawi in tracking forest disturbance, tree cover change and post-disturbance recovery across its northern forest landscapes. The work strengthens national reporting needs including Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation (REDD+), Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs), and Forest and Land Restoration (FLR) commitments, and provides tools for tree cover loss detection using radar data, improved forest stratification, and higher-quality reference data collection.
Country: Peru
Early Adopter: National Forestry and Wildlife Service of Peru (SERFOR) – Directorate of Forest Resource Information (DIV)
Use Case: Forest Inventories
EO company lead: GFZ, support NMBU
Description: The Peru case study develops a scalable biomass estimation tool combining the National Forest Inventory (INFFS) with EO-derived biomass maps. It helps SERFOR update biomass and carbon density layers, address data gaps in inaccessible areas, and support forest management, valuation, and national reporting under REDD+, FREL and NDC commitments.
Country: Malaysia
Early Adopter: Reef Check Malaysia (RCM)
Use Case: Monitoring of Mangrove Areas
EO company lead: DHI
Description: RCM is undertaking a project in Johor, at the southern tip of the Malay Peninsula, with the aim of developing a comprehensive conservation strategy for coastal ecosystems. Current efforts focus on monitoring and mapping seagrass meadows, but these would be significantly strengthened by incorporating improved maps of mangrove extent, condition, and changes over time. Hence, this use case will generate high-resolution, satellite-derived Mangrove maps and trend analyses, together with a reproducible monitoring tool, and ultimately support informed coastal management decisions.
Country: Mozambique
Early Adopter: National Sustainable Development Fund (FNDS) – Monitoring, Reporting and Verification (MRV) Unit
Use Case: UN REDD+ workflows
EO company lead: GFZ (support by NMBU and GAF AG)
Description: The case study supports Mozambique’s MRV Unit in generating multi-scale biomass estimates by combining NFI data with space-based biomass products. It also strengthens forest monitoring in Zambézia, improving the detection of forest degradation, charcoal-related disturbances, and mangrove changes, and enabling more precise biomass and carbon reporting for REDD+ and national inventories.
